DETOX SAFETY

Detox & Withdrawal: Safety Comes First

Detox is not just discomfort — certain withdrawals can be medically dangerous. This page helps you recognize red flags and choose the safest next step.

Emergency warning: seizures, confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, severe shaking, severe dehydration, or suicidal thoughts → call emergency services (911 in Canada/US).

Alcohol / Benzos

Can be life-threatening. Seizure risk. Medical detox strongly recommended.

Opioids

Usually not fatal but feels brutal. Hydration + supervision still important.

Stimulants

Depression + cravings can be intense. Monitoring mental health is critical.

When You MUST Get Medical Help

  • Seizures or history of seizures
  • Hallucinations or confusion
  • Rapid heart rate, chest pain, fainting
  • Can’t keep fluids down for 12–24 hours
  • Uncontrolled shaking / severe agitation
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges

Detox Preparation Checklist

  • Choose a safe location (not alone if possible)
  • Water + electrolytes + light food
  • Warm blanket, phone charger, clean clothing
  • Someone to check-in (even by text)
  • No access to dealers / relapse triggers

The Real Goal of Detox

Detox is the beginning — not the finish line. The most successful recoveries treat detox like a doorway into: counselling, treatment planning, support community, and long-term stability.
