Detox is not just discomfort — certain withdrawals can be medically dangerous.

Emergency warning: seizures, confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, severe shaking, severe dehydration,
or suicidal thoughts → call emergency services (911 in Canada/US).
Alcohol / Benzos
Can be life-threatening. Seizure risk. Medical detox strongly recommended.
Opioids
Usually not fatal but feels brutal. Hydration + supervision still important.
Stimulants
Depression + cravings can be intense. Monitoring mental health is critical.
When You MUST Get Medical Help
- Seizures or history of seizures
- Hallucinations or confusion
- Rapid heart rate, chest pain, fainting
- Can’t keep fluids down for 12–24 hours
- Uncontrolled shaking / severe agitation
- Suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges
Detox Preparation Checklist
- Choose a safe location (not alone if possible)
- Water + electrolytes + light food
- Warm blanket, phone charger, clean clothing
- Someone to check-in (even by text)
- No access to dealers / relapse triggers
